The Village Cheese and Wine Shop is one of the very few businesses with an "open" sign in its window as much of Montecito remains under mandatory evacuation orders as of Saturday.
Staff of the famous, family-owned store have been making and handing out free sandwiches to emergency responders who have been working around the clock searching for mudslide survivors and cleaning up.
"You can't beat a fresh sandwich, and you can't beat this sandwich," said Montecito Firefighter Keith Powell.
Village Cheese and Wine, which has been open for more than 40 years, said the shop has made more than 500 sandwiches since Tuesday's mudslide.
"To see your own community go in a ball of flames and up in mud, it compels you to do something," said owner Patrick Braid. "This is not much, but it's something."
